Scientists believe 50% of the Earth’s surface should be protected for nature. While no wide-ranging study has been conducted for the UK, reports suggest only ~3% of England is ‘effectively protected’.
The best way to achieve the transformation we need is a kind of cross-hatching - wildlife corridors and untouched streams - threaded through and around areas of human habitation.
We can’t flip 50% overnight, but we can start by shifting monoculture farms and trawling routes into regenerative farms surrounded by wildlands.
- Producing healthy, delicious food for people
- Establishing biodiverse habitats for wildlife
- Absorbing carbon to tackle climate change
